#576 – Budget Tip: Soap Saver

Re-purpose the small nylon bags that contain ginger or garlic. Place soap shards in them, then stitch it closed.

I love homemade and artisan-made soaps, particularly those that are citrus-scented.

While the soap I bought while on vacation on the Big Island of Hawai'i is long gone, I'm instantly transported back to Hawai'i whenever I use one that is similarly scented. Who needs a Tardis to visit the French market stalls when a bar of lavender soap will do the trick!

An article in The Harvard Gazette explains why that is:

"Smells are handled by the olfactory bulb, the structure in the front of the brain that sends information to the other areas of the body’s central command for further processing. Odors take a direct route to the limbic system, including the amygdala and the hippocampus, the regions related to emotion and memory."

But that experience is not just washed down the drain. The recall of a pleasant memory can help you slip into a better, more balanced state of being feeling. Shift your thoughts away from the stress to get more clarity and often, a different perspective.

Soap Saver

Call me cheap or call me thrifty. Better yet, simply recognize that I am loath to throw away even the tiniest sliver of those "scentsual" soaps.

I came up with a solution that not only keeps me in suds, but also allows me to practice one of my environmental rules: before discarding an object, find at least one other use for it.

The ginger and garlic I buy comes in little white nylon bags. I realized that I could make them into soap bags/savers that are slightly exfoliating, as well!

I place the soap shards in the bag, then when I have enough, I stitch the bag closed and get to enjoy a multi-scented and lathered experience.
