So began my note to Amber, one of the approachable and knowledgeable proprietors of The Bookman, a delightful used book store with locations in Chilliwack and Abbotsford, British Columbia.

If you have rheumatoid arthritis and/or a fused neck, it makes book hunting so much easier when you can look directly at the spine without craning your neck.

I'm sure you'll find that browsing for books is a delight, even if you don't have rheumatoid arthritis.

Amber took some time to tell me about how the drawers came to be:

"My husband and I spent last spring and summer building those in the shop behind our house listening to CBC Radio and installed them together in the evenings after work. It was truly a labour of love and while there are a couple that stick now and then, all in all they work very well.

The idea originated from a little bookstore in Vancouver, but their drawers were much more rudimentary. We evolved them into the drawers that are in our Chilliwack drawers and improved them in Abbotsford by adding external handles (easier to grab than the lip style we have in Chilliwack) and the longer/stronger drawer extensions (we can't fully open the ones in Chilliwack yet, but will be replacing them soon)."

This is one design worth emulating. Like Arnold says: "I'll be back!" It's not only for the drawers, either. The ambience. The selection. The helpful staff. The resident pet.
