#211 – Gadget Tuesday Giveaway: “Peel Potatoes, Peel Potatoes…

...get the eyes, get the eyes."

When I still had my baby teeth, my baba would take my hand and recite this little rhyme. "Peel potatoes" - she'd trace a circle on my palm. "Get the eyes" - she'd give me a sort of ticklepinch.

It's easier to peel potatoes and get the eyes when you have an ergonomic product such as this 2-in-1 Peeler by Starfrit.

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to test-drive this model. I had my doubts; I thought that the handle design would be tough to use with my "reconfigured" hand. This 2-in-1 Peeler has become my favourite peeler. I quickly and easily peeled the carrots, alternating between the straight and julienne cut. Next up were those elusive potatoes. I must say that I'm practically an expert eye remover!

  1. I got my LL Bean mocs! they are wonderful…thank you so much…I NEVER win anything so this was such a surprise and as you know I am just entering the circle of surgery for a year of so and this was a real boost! thanks again. Nan

  2. What is my favorite way to enjoy potatoes? I have 3 favorites: I love french fries (very unhealthy but I love a healthy version in which you can bake them sprinkled with olive oil and some salt), lightly boiled potatoes sauteed in olive oil and some spices, and baked potatoes with butter.

  3. I cover the bottom of a roasting pan with waxy potatoes (peeled or not!), sprinkle some coarse salt and woody herbs (i.e. thyme, rosemary), then place a large roast on top (typically rolled in those same herbs). The potatoes form the roasting rack, and get basted by the meat above. Often I toss in other root vegetables in the with the potatoes to round out flavours, colours, and nutrients. The French call it a la boulangerie. I call it a great one dish meal, that gives me time for a nap.

  4. My mom has always made the best potato dish with long green beans – lightly simmer potatoes in just a bit of water, with a bay leaf, salt, pepper, when they’ve softened a bit, pan fry in lots of olive oil with the green beans, bit of red pepper flakes – yum!

  5. Well, it’s hard to beat my Daddy’s home fried potatoes. But I would sure love a paper cone of the pommes frittz we used to get from the bratwagons in Germany. Of course, I don’t care to dip them in mayonnaise like the Germans do, but it’s not that bad. I’m sure I spelled pommes frittz wrong.

  6. My favourite potatoes are roasted in the oven with oil or butter ( like my Mom made) or ones that are made into home made pierogies (like my Baba made).

  7. Ah potatoes. Food of the gods. My favourite way to enjoy them, and it was a hard choice to make, I what my mother called Sunday Potatoes. These were made because my father was on an ulcer diet. To make them you boil the potatoes, then cover them in butter and out them under the broiler for enough minutes to make them golden brown. Yum. The 2 in 1 peeler would help in this process.
