Oh, Canada!

O Canada!

Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

I remember when we replaced "God Save Our Queen" with "O Canada." Shivers always run up and down my spine each time our voices unite to sing our anthem.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The True North strong and free!

I was both surprised and saddened to learn that with the 2010 Olympics, the phrase "with glowing hearts" was trademarked. In my opinion, our national anthem belongs to all of us, as do our lakes and rivers.

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

I loved beginning the school day paying tribute to this place I call home. Where and how are we to learn this glorious anthem if not in school? It's time to stand and guard this piece of our heritage and give thanks for all we have.

God keep our land glorious and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

If we, as Canadians don't do so, who will?

With glowing hearts we see thee rise
The True North strong and free!

I'm thankful that I live here, in such a place, where we are fortunate to have the services, the resources and the people we do.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Yes, there are things that desperately need fixing. We need to find a way to work and stand together to maintain our standards of health, education and environment.

When I chose the topic Your National Anthem, I was unaware that it would fall on September 11th which is Patriot Day in the United States.

Here's to those who have fallen. May you rest easy. May those left behind find peace in their hearts. May the people of the world also know a time of peace, a time of cooperation, a time of joy.

  1. Strange as it may sound to you, this is the first time that I have read about Canada’s National Anthem. I knew that you had changed over from the Old God Save The Queen, but somehow your low key presence, has not kept me informed about this wonderful song. Thank you.

  2. Marianna, you as a nation have chosen what I consider to be one of the finest of the National Anthems, for it reflects your finer nature and an appreciation of what you have rather than a war stance, a guns and bullets tribute to victories.

I can see why you chose the topic. Now, Ramana, Grannymar and I will have to get even!!! LOL

  3. I majored in-excuse the word-organ. So I am moved more by music than words. I’m going to find the music to your National Anthem.

  4. LBC’ers,
Your brilliance never ends!I love how you’ve taken this so-called tough theme and worked wonders with it. A++ to you all!

    GM,
I must say I do like the words.

    Ramana,
We’ll call it even then, ok? I hadn’t heard yours either.

    Conrad,
Yes, I like how you described the tone of our anthem.

Fingers crossed the rest of it doesn’t get “auctioned” off!

    BHB,
If you click the second O’Canada, you’ll hear the official version.

  5. Another call to God. Interesting.

The trade mark item is interesting… commercial use of it should, perhaps, be forbidden by Law.

I seem to be in a minority… which is interesting in itself… You all seem so proud of your anthems… but so far none have been personalised around the Head of State. Mm!

    Thanks for the insight.
