Your Home Environment

Home is where the heart is. Home is also where your chronic illness may invite you to stay for longer than you might prefer. Consider putting some principles to work to create a home environment that is soothing to you.

In my slideshow for HealthCentral.com, I mention a number of areas in your home environment that can be cajoled/tackled/tickled/whipped into shape to give you a much-needed sense of comfort. When you feel better, your heart responds in a positive way. Those signals that head north from the heart to the head send a message that all is well. The stress response is not triggered, which is good news for you. Since chronic stress turns up the heat (the inflammatory response), it is important that you take baby or giant steps, to do what you can to nourish your sense of home.

When you live with a chronic illness, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), your attention is often focused on your internal environment; what hurts, what is swollen, how you can't move or how exhausted, depressed, fatigued, frustrated or sad you feel. With a sprinkling of creativity, some planning, organization and a bit of energy and money, you can remake your external environment into a place of restoration that helps pull you out of those negative feelings and into a place of restoration.
